I created my first set of highlighter kids back in February, and I've been meaning to do more and expand on the theme. I bought some extremely bright watercolour tubes recently, so I'm using them instead of actual highlighters. They give me more control over the colours' intensity. The Highlighter Kids have a number of meanings for me, but I haven't managed to verbalize effectively what they are. I'll have to get it down on paper sometime and share it. Feel free to let me know what you think they're about. Ink and watercolour on paper, 5x7 inches.

It's just like the punk or goth movement. It's about making a statement and attitude. "We don't absorb the sunlight, we reflect it thus becoming miniature suns ourselves"
Or they just worship Doug Henning.

Well, for me highlighters kids are like Hollister kids-Mommy and Daddy's brads that read seventeen magazine, talks in a shrill tone of voice and go shopping to the mall “totally awesome-last season” clothes. Heard music from Avril Lavigne, The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, looovveeee High School Musical, Camp Rock, and the “totally cute” Zack Efron and, of course, Nick and Joe Jonas.
(Sorry if I offend someboby)

this one seems to be saying " I wear these ridiculous things because I belong in the crowd that doesn't belong, and also because I am better than most." but that's just my interp. Also i am obsessed with your drawings Johnsy. Don't stop being cool.

I have found that stripes keep one from going in circles.

Hey folks, thanks so much for sharing your interpretations! Keep them coming. Some of these are very close to my own ideas. In any case I find it fascinating to see how people interpret an image, and the many different angles people have. I'm also glad this is not a self portrait :)
