You pick the object and the book, and I'll draw it. That's right. I'll draw whatever object reading whatever book you want, and I'll paint it too, all on a nice 8x10 inch piece of acid-free watercolour paper.
After I made the original series of objects reading books, I started thinking about creating custom versions. Books are such a personal thing, and if you get to choose what the object and the book is, well, you end up with a bit of an interesting portrait. It could be a nice gift.
This is the first time I've offered to do personal commissions. I've stayed away from doing them in the past, mostly because I simply haven't had the time or I'm worried they don't work out as well as I'd like (I worry a lot). But making them in a format like this works for me.

I know you probably know this, but your work is AWESOME!!! I love your dry and corny sense of humor!!

I thought you should know that after getting super excited and ordering a print for myself last night, I got to work this morning and asked my friends on Facebook to guess 1. the book and 2. the object I chose.
Ha, everyone got the book right but after some incorrect guesses by my friends which included a beer, a glass of wine, a pencil, another book, a cup of coffee, a rainbow, a monkey and a cat (which we realized were not objects but animals), and a pair of glasses it was my mom that got it exactly right on her very first try--A potato reading The Waves by Virginia Woolf.
So yes... Thanks for the great art and an extra fun way to waste valuable work hours on a slow Wednesday morning. It sparked a nice conversation and made my mom feel very happy and smug. (I now owe her a beer next time she comes to visit.)

Love this!! This would make a great gift for a avid book reader. Do you have a etsy? I think these would do Really well on etsy.com, you should definitely check it out if you haven't all ready.

Hi Megan,
I'm so glad all of this ended up in a bit of quality nonsense time on a Wednesday morning! And thanks for the order. I look forward to tackling the book-reading potato.

Hi Anne,
I do have an Etsy shop but there's nothing in it. I got tired of managing two shops so I let all my items expire. I found Etsy to be cumbersome to maintain compared to a dedicated ecommerce shop. However I've noticed they've made a number of changes recently that make life easier for sellers, so that's good. I may give it a go again sometime. For now, I sell everything on my standalone shop: http://shop.marcjohns.com

You’re so cool! I don’t suppose I’ve read anything like this before. So nice to find somebody with some original thoughts on this subject. Really thank you for starting this up. this website is something that is needed on the web, someone with a little originality. Useful job for bringing something new to the internet!
