Hi, I think you are doing just fine! I subscribe to your email and maybe I am not touched by everything, but I really admire your drive and spirit to keep moving forward and trying something new every single day.
It is a reminder for me to keep on working and working, because then once in a while I too will make something that is really good! And between that it will be a couple of not so excellent pieces… but they are important too, because I can learn from them. And probably they are the road that move me forward so I can find gold!
You have become my wake up call, when I see your email in the morning it kicks me in the butt and says "Look he has already posted a drawing today! Get to work. Draw something now!"

Oh, and I like your style!

I spend most of my time not having a clue what I'm doing but I figure that's ok as long as I'm creating. I draw and paint and illustrate books but I'm also creative in other ways (I'm a social researcher by trade) and find that creating in other formats helps inspire my art and vice versa. No-one can create wonderful things every single time they put pen to paper and I think as artists we learn just as much from things that don't work as we do from things that do! I also think that we are the worst judges of our own work...it's too easy to be really critical.

I adore your work (always smile when your e-mail pops into my inbox) and your style is distinctive...I suspect that you would bring that style to whatever you choose to do so I say go for it...experiment and see where it takes you.

Keep cranking. You're inspiring so many of us.

its always good to keep them coming as long as one is alive :)
i dont know what am doing - so true :)

Does anyone know what they are doing? Really? I doubt it. Just keep trying. I bet someone will like it whatever it is.

  • Marc Johns makes drawings and puts them on this blog, and sometimes he makes them for people like National Geographic, Google, Wired, Newsweek, Tommy Hilfiger, and Harper Collins. He has a book called I MADE THESE DRAWINGS FOR YOU. Many of his fans have tattoos of his drawings.

He lives with his wife Kristen, two sons, and his drawer full of pens in Victoria, BC, Canada. Marc also finds it strange to talk about himself in the third person.
