Really cool, it sounds so inspiring. Unfortunately I can't draw

It was neat to see all your supplies :)

What sort of scanner and printer do you use?

Marc Johns

Hi Ben, my scanner is about 10 years old (and groans like an old man when it's scanning) - an Epson Perfection 1250. My printer is the inexpensive but decent Canon iP4700 - although the printer is not part of my drawing workflow!

Becca Olvera

¡Qué bonito! We use the same materials, pretty much. There are some exceptions, of course. Thanks a lot for sharing, Marc :)

Kathy Crabbe

Hi Marc - love your work and the simplicity of it all! Was wondering what kind of gouache you recommend? Cheers from a fellow artist :)

Hi Kathy!
I'd recommend Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache. I've also tried Designer's Gouache by Daler Rowney and it's good too. Keep in mind I don't have a ton of experience using it though! I'm a watercolour guy.

  • Marc Johns makes drawings and puts them on this blog, and sometimes he makes them for people like National Geographic, Google, Wired, Newsweek, Tommy Hilfiger, and Harper Collins. He has a book called I MADE THESE DRAWINGS FOR YOU. Many of his fans have tattoos of his drawings.

He lives with his wife Kristen, two sons, and his drawer full of pens in Victoria, BC, Canada. Marc also finds it strange to talk about himself in the third person.
