reluctantly tribal

Sometimes we get asked to put on warpaint when we don't want to, or adopt the customs of a tribe that we don't really relate to, or want to belong to in the first place. The rituals of the tribe are inauthentic to us. When I say 'tribe' I mean it in a more contemporary sense such as the workplace, family, or a social circle. I've often felt like an outsider in many of the 'tribes' I've been a part of, acting more as an observer rather than a participant. I suppose that is an appropriate role for an artist. (But don't worry, I'm not a complete loner. As I get older and wiser and more true to myself, I'm beginning to find communities that I am quite happy to connect with.) Ink and watercolour on paper, 8x10 inches.
