From Rain to Rainbows - a book from Chronicle Books

From Rain to Rainbows is a charming new hardcover book published by Chronicle, and I'm thrilled to have three of my drawings included.

They say that without the rain you'd never see the rainbow, and this book is a collection of, you guessed it, delightful artwork about rain and rainbows.

From the introduction:

Here's what they don't say much: that both rain and rainbows can make you happy if you let them. That to cheer yourself up, sometimes all you need to do is get out of yourself for a moment.

fist bump drawing for National Geographic

I've got a small drawing in this month's (March 2015) National Geographic magazine. It's about fist bumps, and how you transfer 90% fewer germs to another person with a fist bump compared to a handshake.

I've said it before... but I learn the most interesting things when I do work for National Geographic.

drawings for Readers Digest

I did a couple of illustrations for the December issue of Reader's Digest magazine (Canadian edition). The article is by Nick Offerman, author, woodworker, and yes, the Nick Offerman who plays Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation.

The article is from Offerman's book, Paddle Your Own Canoe.

One more thing: Reader's Digest has loads of great illustration in their magazine. Tons! I was really impressed. Kudos to their team for a well-designed publication and investing in great images.

drawings for Toyota

I did a collection of drawings for a series of Toyota Rav4 ads. Here's a half page ad in last Friday's Globe and Mail (on page 3):

These ads are running in a variety of newspapers across Canada. There will be billboards too.

These were so fun to draw! It was a collection of outdoor Canadiana, as well as elements of the car. Here's a couple of close-ups:

Snowshoes and long underwear, man. I feel so patriotic. (Even though I live in a part of Canada that rarely gets snow, and never requires snowshoes or long underwear.)

featured in Obscura magazine

Obscura magazine did an 8 page feature on my work in their latest issue. Obscura is a beautifully made magazine (lovely uncoated paper, fabric taped spine, etc.) based out of Hong Kong. They asked me to answer a number of questions with drawings, and this was the result.

drawings of baseball team names for National Geographic

I've got a full page of drawings in this month's National Geographic magazine! I'm so excited about this one. It's about Minor League Baseball, specifically the wacky names that some of the teams have. I LOVED tackling this one.

article in Elle Slovenia

I'm in the July issue of the Slovenia edition of Elle magazine! Never thought I'd say that before. They did a nice little series of pieces on five different illustrators, including yours truly. Here I am with my What to focus on drawing:

One of my drawings made a little appearance in issue #70 of UK magazine Papercrafter. It's for an article on Pinterest, and they interviewed Allison Tyler of WTF, Pinterest fame. She uses my post-it note drawing as one of her mottos. Thanks Allison!

supertasters drawing for National Geographic

Here's another small drawing I did for National Geographic, this time about 'supertasters', people who have a heightened sense of taste. I don't find myself drawing tongues very often, so this was fun. It's in the December 2013 issue.

I did another small drawing for National Geographic, this time about depressed rats. Did you know that rats get sad when they are exposed to too much light? They're like humans, only completely opposite. It's in the November 2013 issue.

cover of Revue singulière

I've got a drawing on the cover of Revue singulière, a literary journal published by l'éditeur singulier in Paris.

My French is really rusty, so I haven't managed read any of the essays yet, but I will (must practice my French more!). The journal is available from a variety of bookstores and A.P.C. stores throughout Paris, as well as online from FNAC and directly from the publisher.

diamond planet drawing for National Geographic

I did another small drawing for National Geographic! It's about a recent discovery of a planet about 40 light-years away that (likely) has a diamond layer nearly 2,500 miles thick. Whoa. This is why I love this magazine.
